My Next Gadget???

Sunday, August 12th, 2007

I think I’ve been doing a pretty good job of controlling gadget lust lately. I’ve been diligently suppressing my desire for an iPhone, a new Tablet PC, and a whole host of other gadgets. Tonight however, I watched Hugo Ortega;s video review of the HTC Shift and I may have met my match. It seems to be the perfect device for me and it’s going to be hard to look at my poor Q1 the same again. It’s not fair to the Samsung, but no one ever promised fair, right?

Development On My Q1

Wednesday, June 6th, 2007

Lately I’ve been using my UMPC more as the companion device it was intended for instead of as my primary computing device. For the most part, that means more content consumption than creation. I just can’t quite get away from the mobility of the device however, so I still occasionally push the limits of its ability.

I have also been dabbling more in doing some VB programming (mostly because I’m a geek and I miss it) and wanted to take that activity with me remotely. So, the other day I performed a little experiment and installed Visual Studio on my Samsung Q1. My assumption was that it would struggle to work at all and I prepared myself to be completely disappointed.

It turns out that the Q1 gets along better than I thought it would. Sure, code compiles way faster on my desktop system with its Core 2 Duo processor, but the Q1 gets the job done. The biggest struggle: screen resolution! You can see in the screenshots here that the native resolution doesn’t really display enough of the coding window to be useful. If you pump the display up to 1024×600 though, it’s quite usable. Again, my UMPC has impressed me with its ability to enhance my mobile computing experience.

My Samsung Q1 Is Quite The Workhorse

Since I had to pack up my X41 and FedEx it to the support team today, my only computing device was my Samsung Q1.

Processing Power of the Samsung Q1

Thursday, September 14th, 2006

I bet I’ve been using my Q1 for 80% of my non-professional computing lately. The remaining personal computing is split between my X41 and my wife’s laptop. I have grown accustomed to the lower performance of the Celeron processor in my Q1and had managed to convince myself that it is sufficient for most of my computing needs.

Well, the other night, I had the need to edit 120 photographs I took at my brother-in-law’s wedding and I knew that my UMPC was simply not up to the task. Instead, I blew the dust off my gaming system that hasn’t even been turned on for almost two months. It’s a 2.67 GHz Core 2 Duo processor overclocked to just over 3 GHz with 3 GB of RAM and a pair of decent-sized hard drives in a RAID 0 configuration - it’s a screamer!

Working on that system was an absolute dream! I forgot what that kind of raw horsepower is like, but it didn’t take long to reacquaint myself! It was so snappy that using it made me giddy. At one point, I opened all 120 photos in Photoshop and the system performance was still better than my Q1.

It helped me put things back into perspective: sure, you could use a UMPC for your sole computing device, but the processing power will probably disappoint you on occasion. These devices really should be given secondary-PC-status and allowed to shine as the mobile computing devices they were designed to be. Don’t get me wrong, I still LOVE my Q1 and wouldn’t trade it for anything (and I’m still using it to write this entry even though my more powerful desktop PC is sitting idle in the next room). :^)

MIA Explanation

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

I know I have completely disappeared from the blogosphere lately and I feel really bad for having done so. We recently purchased a new home and the honey-do list is longer than it has ever been in 12 years of marriage. From the moment I finish dinner to the moment I fall exhausted into my bed at night is filled with different activities around the house. As a partial list, I’ve hung ceiling fans, painted, installed a garage door opener, graded the back yard, built a fence, built shelving in the garage, and installed sprinklers.

Being the geek that I am, I’ve included my UMPC in as many of these projects as possible. Sometimes I just use it as my jukebox to play music while I work, but sometimes it helps me plan things out. As an example, check out my sprinkler planning (the guy at Home Depot was impressed):

I’m hoping that as the projects are getting smaller, I’ll have more time to update Geekblog…so stay tuned!

Upgrading the RAM in My Q1

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Inspired by Kevin Tofel, I opened the case on my Q1 on Friday to upgrade the RAM. I installed a 1 GB DIMM and the process was a breeze. I have found that I can leave more applications running now without any performance degradation, but overall, the change is fairly subtle. Kudos to Kevin for his pioneering effort - His pictures and step-by-step procedure took all the fear out of the upgrade.
