About The UMPCGeek
My name is Brian Jarvis and I am the UMPCGeek. I have been a total gadget addict since I was about 10 years old when my dad brought home the family’s first computer: A Timex Sinclair 1000. We spent many hours typing BASIC code into that PC so that we could move squares around the television in what we thought were video games. I have been hopeless ever since.
I earned a bachelor’s of science in Information Systems from Portland State University and an MBA from the University of Portland. I work for Intel Corporation and have since 2000. I spent the first four years there in the IT department and have spent the last four in the sales and marketing group selling our motherboard products. As a disclaimer, I am not an official voice for the company and most of the things I write about here on my site do not have anything to do with my professional life. I am careful to avoid any conflict of interest.
I have to mention as an extension of my professional life that at Intel I have become friends with some great geeks over the years. One that has influenced me more than anyone and was responsible for my introduction to blogging is Josh Bancroft. He’s a great friend and although I have never told him before, I consider him a mentor.
I read dozens of tech blogs and eventually I plan to do a blogroll of my favorites. When I’m not reading or writing about what’s new in the world of tech, I like to dabble in writing code. I am currently getting into doing some C# programming, but have written a couple of simple apps in VB .Net.
I do have something of a life outside of the tech world. I volunteer with a local Boy Scout unit and am an active member of my church. My wife and I have three great kids (there is never enough time to spend with my family). On my “some day” list, I have plans for a personal blog where I share some of my non-tech views.
