I’ve been dealing with the date and time being wrong on my iPod Touch since I bought it. If you’re not familiar with the problem, I’ll give you a one sentence summary:
Under certain conditions (don’t know the specifics), when you sync your iPod Touch with your Windows XP computer, the time zone on the iPod defaults back to “Cupertino” and the time is randomly generated for some day back in November of 2007.
I have done a bunch of digging around on the internet to try and find a solution. Last night I took one more try and came across something in the Apple support forums: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1357347&tstart=0
Although it doesn’t present a solution, it does present the workaround of closing iTunes before every sync then relaunching it after the iPod is already attached. This is working well for me and now I can finally synchronize my iPod with my coputer without messing up the time and date. I’ll be satisfied with this for a while, but I’m expecting Apple to fix this bug.
BTW, the other option of turning off daylight savings detection did not work for me.
Reinstall iTunes http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923?viewlocale=en_US (post Rick November 15) help me! Good Luck! iPod Touch 16Gb
I think I have figured out a solution, at least for me. My Windows Vista was set to sync time settings on the net. I think the ipod touch was going back to the last synced time on the computer. I turned off the computer time sync and it has not changed for the last three times I hooked it up. Maybe it will continue to work and I hope this helps someone else.
I changed the auto time program in windows, from msn to NIST. Seems to work.
Same thing for me, Why spend a ton of money on something when it has a consistent bug like this? I have found that deleting my ipod touch’s back ups in itunes stops the changing of the time and date. BUT, I DONT WANT to have to delete it everytime I sync my ipod. Apple sucks when it comes to this bug
So I have changed TWO things that have helped so far. Since I changed these two things, I have synced my ipod 5 or 6 times and nothing has changed. I have a 16 GB ipod touch, 2.2 (whatever that is), and windows vista on my toshiba laptop.
These two things have been mentioned in this thread, but i will say what I did anyways.
Left click on the time clock in the bottom left hand corner of your screen>click change date and time settings…>click on the internet time tab>uncheck the box. Close the window and go back using the same steps, but now it should say “This computer is not set to automatically synchronize with an Internet time server.”
The other thing I did was on the ipod touch itself:
Go to settings>Mail, Contacts, Calandars>Scroll down to the very bottom>Time Zone support> turn it OFF
I have a 32 GB iPod Touch, 2.2.1 with Windows XP, and unfortunately that did not work for me.
You are right, Today the date and time changed. It is weird though because sometimes it will automatically change itself from the wrong time to the correct time on the Ipod.
Alot of people have said to close Itunes before you hook your ipod up via USB. Especially if you ahve your itunes open and have your computer hibernate overnight. When you get on yoru computer hte next day, close your itunes before you hook your ipod up. Have the Itunes automatically open. Anyhow, I have noticed that just not having your Itunes stay open when your not using it helps. If I exit Itunes, and keep it closed, the next time I sync my ipod the time is correct and does not change.
Another thing to try:Try closing iTunes and shut the touch right down by holding the sleep/wake button then sliding the slider when prompted. Then connect the touch to your computer allowing the iPod to start on it’s own as well as iTunes auto starting.
I have the same problem, and tried every suggestion on this blog but didnt’t help. In my iPod Touch 16GB the date and time zone stay ok, but every time I open iTunes the time increases by one hour.
In my case the bug shows up particularly when running iTunes. The problem is not with sync, since I disabled auto sync and still happens. And when, with iTunes already running, I reestablish the correct time on the iPod and sync again, it stays ok. So I think it has to do with iTunes’ recognition of the iPod at startup.
Hope this helps to anybody trying to deal with this bug, but unfortunately mine is only one among several different behaviours of it.
I think Apple should only be concerned on making the hardware and let anyone else program the software and firmware. It’s so limited, they always make it their own way and won’t let you change anything, as if they knew what you want.
TRY this…
Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars
At the VERY BOTTOM of the window…
turn OFF ‘Time Zone Support’
I don’t think this has anything to do with time zones since the random time change also goes off by many days and minutes. If it were time zone or if you are only enxperiencing a problem with hours or perhaps one day, then time zone could be a factor.
I have also updated to the latest quicktime without a fix.
I have found that if you are using a laptop or perhaps a desktop that you put to sleep instead of shutting down, and if iTunes is left open (even minimized to system tray) and the PC goes to sleep, you MUST close iTunes before trying to sync with your iTouch. If you don’t time sync gets completely off (Date, hours, and minutes).
This is posted in the Apple site as well, but no solution other then closing iTunes before syncing. Sounds redicules, but something gets confused when you leave iTunes running and put the PC to sleep.
Happy touching
LouP.
I have a 8GB iPod touch bought not even a week ago. I have windows XP professional, installed just last Friday as the laptop had to be reformatted and I’m also having this problem. So Apple hasn’t done anything to fix this, and it’s definitely not a virus, since my hard drive is basically empty.
I live in Puerto Rico (GMT-4) and the time keeps changing back to Caracas (GMT-4:30). And My problem is the same one as elrapa above. It happens every time I open iTunes, whether it starts syncing or not. I’ve tried everything on this posts and nothing has worked for me so far. It is incredibly annoying and frustrating every time I see the time change back a half an hour.
But from what I’ve seen, apple hasn’t done anything at the moment. That just sucks. If someone has new info, please don’t hesitate to post it!
I have also tried everything on this post and nothing has worked for me. I have windows XP Professional and an iTouch 16GB 2nd generation. I have been having this problem even since I got it. It is set to cupertino which is the same time zone as I am in (GMT-8:00 pacific time). When I sync it my time jumps an hour ahead….time is suppose to be 10:00 but my iTouch says 11:00.
I also have problems with syncing to Outlook Calendar…some of my dates and times remain the same on my iTouch when i sync but some of my dates and times change by a day or by one hour later….
I sure hope someone comes up with a fix soon….Apple doesn’t help.
I spent 3 hours on the phone w/apple and they told me to go get a new one at the apple store…that they had never heard of this problem and that it must be the iTouch. When I got to the store they told me it was not my iTouch and wouldn’t replace it. And that they were aware of this but had no answers. They had me come back the next day with my laptop and did all kinds of things but NOTHING worked. They think it is a problem with Outlook…Who knows…I am not happy with this purchase…No one can afford to be late for appointments.
It seems the problem is solved, at least for me. I just hooked my iPod Touch 32 GB to a USB port in my computer and time did not change as it always did. My problem was that time was always reset to Caracas GTM -4:30 (while mine is La Paz GTM -4:00) after connecting my iPod to the USB port. I could not believe this and tried again, and no problem too.
All I did was to upgrade to the new iTunes version, 8.1.0.51. I just did that because when I started iTunes today, the program asked me if I wanted to upgrade to latest version.
Please confirm if it worked for you. Good luck.
Yes! I it’s fixed for me as well. Same as Fernando, I downloaded the new iTunes, version 8.1.0.51, this morning and the problem has gone away.
Finally! Had exactly the same problem as Fernando (32 GB Touch, problem with Caracas GTM and La Paz) but I downloaded the latest version of Itunes and the time problem has gone.
So I am downloading the iTunes update now and so far by the looks of the comments I think I will be happy so I am leaving it at this and getting back to this in a few minutes…OK just restarted the computer and unfortunately connecting it changed the time and the timezone to LA when I am in Halifax so that really sucks, and I deleted the device history and still nothing so now i am syncing the thing and again with it manually set to the proper time zone hoping that will work (by the way I have a 1st gen 8gb iPod touch using 2.2.1 firmware) ok yah no luck when attaching it while itunes is open it still changes the timezone, but syncing is fine and plugging it in when iTunes isn’t open is fine. But other than that no luck, i will try formating my ipod and then syncing and if that works then I will reply if not it didn’t work
Well I didn’t find a solution to stop it from happening but something you could do while you look for one is to just change the time manually. Just go to settings, general, date and time. Annoying, yes but you won’t have to worry about waking up an hour late the next day.
I have the same problem and it’s not that big a problem. Just charge it through an outlet, i use mi speaker system, and when you need to sync it, just sync it and reset the clock. I mean we are really talking about only two or so minutes to reset it. that has worked for me so far, because i see no real reason to sync it that often.
It’s weird. My itouch changes to a time zone that shouldn’t matter but it changes the time and date. I am really confused O.o

This worked like a charm for me! thanks
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!
I’V FOUND A SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All you need to do is to set the windows to Sync time with the server.
and make sure that the time is correct!
if the time is still not correct, try to check the ”Auto daylight saving”
it worked fine for me.
somewhere amidst all the solutions listed above one of them fixed my ipod i think it was the “time zone support turn off” or the “delete backup ipod” one. i went to preferences devices ideleted the backup exited itunes went and turned off time zone support re-entered itunes and all has been well ever since. (note: i never unpluged my ipod touch for any of this)
Try this get firmware 3.1.2 and go set your current time zone then go settings — General —Time and date and select set time and date. Enter your time .worked for me. The random time happened when I left my battery dead for a week .HOPE IT WORKS
ok i found out the solution.it will work for everyones ipod touches.
plug in you ipod> close out itunes> change date and time on ipod to the correct time> change the state to where you live> make sure computer has right time> open itunes
thats all you have to do and it stays that way
