For the occasional photo that I post here to my blog, I usually use the camera on my cell phone. I know the quality of those photos is substandard and it almost hurts to upload them. I own a Digital Rebel XT which is a great digital SLR that takes amazing photos, but I very rarely have it with me due to its size, weight, and cost. For Father’s Day, I was given a Sony DSM-W30 digital camera and I see that changing my photo taking behavior.
Now for the bummer: my wife is a chaperon this week at a girl’s camp and asked to take the camera with her. I haven’t even had a good chance to play with it yet. :^)
Here’s the comparison shot:

I took a training class today and the instructor was one of those people who thinks with a pen in his hand. I don’t think he’s capable of stopping himself from circling things on flipcharts, whiteboards, handouts, or anything else inanimate. I had a great time watching him think.
If there is a presenter anywhere in the world that needs a Tablet PC, it is this guy! Take a look at one of the cleaner flipcharts…

Lately I’ve been using my UMPC more as the companion device it was intended for instead of as my primary computing device. For the most part, that means more content consumption than creation. I just can’t quite get away from the mobility of the device however, so I still occasionally push the limits of its ability.
I have also been dabbling more in doing some VB programming (mostly because I’m a geek and I miss it) and wanted to take that activity with me remotely. So, the other day I performed a little experiment and installed Visual Studio on my Samsung Q1. My assumption was that it would struggle to work at all and I prepared myself to be completely disappointed.
It turns out that the Q1 gets along better than I thought it would. Sure, code compiles way faster on my desktop system with its Core 2 Duo processor, but the Q1 gets the job done. The biggest struggle: screen resolution! You can see in the screenshots here that the native resolution doesn’t really display enough of the coding window to be useful. If you pump the display up to 1024×600 though, it’s quite usable. Again, my UMPC has impressed me with its ability to enhance my mobile computing experience.

Last week when I had the chance to sit down and geek out with Josh Bancroft, I was again impressed with the performance of Parallels on his MacbookPro. It runs so well that Windows applications seem to be native to the Mac. I was particularly impressed (again) with
